For Sale: Live Kisses from Robert Pattinson

Call him the Kissing King of Cannes. Helping to raise some much-needed funds at amfAR's annual Cinema Against AIDS event in Cannes Thursday night, Robert Pattinson auctioned off something only he could provide – a kiss on the cheek.

Actually, the Twilight star, 23, auctioned them off to not one, but two bidders – at $20,000 per kiss – all part of his participation in this year's 62nd film festival. As Pattinson told PEOPLE about his first-ever Cannes experience, "I'm been working every day this week so it's pretty exhausting, but it's just as glamorous as I expected."

The amfAR event certainly wasn't short on star power. As the auction took place on a variety of items, Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson, Hayden Panettiere, Michelle Yeoh and Dita von Teese got on stage to boost the bidding. Earlier, host Sharon Stone paid moving tribute to the late Natasha Richardson, whose efforts were tied to the charity.

Hartnett Would Strip

In a lighter moment, Josh Hartnett offered to strip – for money that would go to research for an AIDS cure – but the bidding never got high enough.

Diane Kruger nearly fell off a Chanel transporter she was trying to sell on stage but was rescued gallantly by beau Joshua Jackson. David Furnish, husband of Elton John, generously sold his own watch.

Then there was special guest former President Bill Clinton, who urged the others to open their purses and wallets. "Everyone in this room is better off than 99.9 percent of people on this entire earth," he told the gathering, which also included Marion Cotillard, Robin Wright Penn, Eva Herzigova and Paris Hilton.

Clinton even went so far as to donate his own Alpine Alto saxophone – and it went for a staggering $130,000.

Other items sold included a 1995 Bruce Weber picture of Sean Penn ($100,000) and a private screening of the Brad Pitt-Quentin Tarantino movie Inglourious Basterds, which included dinner at New York's Cipriani Wall Street ($60,000).

Donatella Versace designed the event, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company, Chopard and Luxury Limited Edition, and more than $1 million was raised – a remarkable achievement, according to amfAR chairman Harvey Weinstein. He told PEOPLE: "This is an amazing turnout this year, and we've doing this for 15 years. I think, considering the economy, we did a great job here tonight.”

Police Probe Mystery of Lucy Gordon's Death

Spider-Man 3 actress Lucy Gordon, who was found dead in her Paris apartment Wednesday, is being recalled as a promising actress whose burgeoning career was set to flourish further.

The British actress, who apparently hanged herself, would have turned 29 on Friday – an occasion that leaves friends and family members further perplexed as to what triggered the tragedy. Gordon's French agent, Elizabeth Simpson, called the death "baffling," and added: "She was sparkling, warm-hearted, touching and generous, and we will miss her sorely "

Police in Paris have reportedly interviewed an unnamed male friend who is said to have found Gordon. According to The Times of London, local detectives have ruled out foul play.

Remembering his daughter, father Richard Gordon told the British Press Association, "We have always been immensely proud of her and her achievements. We love her so much. She was called Lucy and she has lived up to that: she has been the light of our lives, me and my wife Sue, and daughter Katie.

"She was a lovely, generous, unselfish person who gave her all for others and thought of others before herself ... She has been the most beautiful daughter. We are obviously devastated."

The Oxford-born actor appeared in a dozen films and played reporter Jennifer Dugan in the third instalment of Spider-Man. She made her debut in 2001 in Perfume, which follows a group of characters at a New York modelling show. In 2002 she starred in historical drama The Four Feathers with Heath Ledger.
